EVKA 7. rahvusvaheline konverents "Suurte kultuuriliste ja kirjanduslike müütide saatus tänapäeval" seab tähelepanu keskpunkti maailmakirjanduse ja -kultuuri suurte müütide tänapäevase retseptsiooni. "Tänapäeva" all on moeldud eeskätt XX sajandi 2. poolt ja XXI sajandi algust.

The 7th International Conference of the EACL "Contemporary Fate of Great Cultural and Literary Myths" will focus on the contemporary reception of great cultural and literary myths. "Contemporary" in the present context means above all the 2nd half of the 20th century and the start of the 21st century.
Conference papers and academic discussion are expected to provide answers to the following questions:

What factors have enhanced or hindered the reception and presence of great myths of world literature and culture in international and national cultural spaces in West and East?

To what extent have contemporary social and ideological processes influenced and determined the reception of great myths of previous historical periods?

How has the reception of great myths been influenced by the contemporary translation process and what role has been played by
the translation philosophy of the mediators (translators) and their personalities?

What role have the great myths had in the contemporary international and nation literary canon and, more generally, culture? How have postmodernism and the post/late-modern era interpreted the great myths of the previous epochs? To what extent can old literary-cultural myths be treated as "grand narratives", an object of criticism in postmodernism?

What role has been played in the reception of great literary-cultural myths by national histories of national, world or foreign literature?

What has characterized the relationship between ideological-cultural "centres" and "peripheries" in the contemporary reception of great myths?

What has characterized, since the middle of the 20th century, the reception of great myths of Eastern culture and literature in the West, and vice versa?

What features have predominated in the relationship between reception theory (philosophy, ideology) and reception practice of great cultural and literary myths?

Papers highlighting the processes of the reception of great cultural and literary myths from a comparative-theoretical and comparative-practical points of view are welcome at the conference.

Konverentsi peamine töökeel on inglise keel, kuid ettekandeid voib teha ka prantsuse, hispaania ja saksa keeles. Sel juhul tuleb esitada (hiljemalt 15. septembriks 2007) ettekande ingliskeelne kokkuvote (1-2 lk), mis kuulajaile laiali jagatakse. Konverentsi ettekandeid kohapeal ei tolgita.
Konverentsi ettekande ülemkestus on 20 minutit. Konverentsi osavotuavaldus tuleb saata korraldavale toimkonnale hiljemalt 30. aprilliks 2007. See peab sisaldama ettekande lopliku pealkirja, andmed ettekandja kohta ja ettekande lühikirjelduse (250 - 300 sona). Konverentsi ettekanded avaldatakse EVKA rahvusvahelise aastakirja "Interlitteraria" erinumbris (13, 2008).
24. septembri ohtul toimub konverentsi pidulik avamine, kus ühtlasi esitletakse "Interlitteraria" uut numbrit (12, 2007). Konverentsi tööpäevad on 24., 25. ja 26. september 2007.

The main working language of the conference will be English but papers can also be presented in French, Spanish and German. In the latter cases, a summary of one to two pages in English should be mailed to the organizers by Sept 15, 2007. The summary will be made available to the participants during the conference. There will be no translation of the papers at the conference.
The deadline for submitting the application form, containing the final title of a 20-minute paper and a 250 - 300 word abstract, is April 30, 2007. All participants who have returned their application form on time will receive an official invitation to the conference issued by the University of Tartu. The papers of the conference will be published in the monographic number of the annual journal of the EACL, Interlitteraria (13, 2008).
The conference fee is 50 Euros, payable to the secretary of the ECLA, Mrs. Kersti Unt, at the registration of the conference. The registration fee will cover lunches provided for the participants during the conference (Sept 24, 25, 26). As a rule, it is expected that the participants themselves pay for their accommodation in Tartu. Only exceptionally, organizers may consider covering, entirely or partly, the accommodation costs of participants who come from countries with hard currency difficulties. Organizers will gladly assist with reservations (the prices vary from 25 to 80 Euros per night).
There will be a cultural programme for the conference participants: a walking tour in Tartu (and hopefully in Tallinn), visits to museums, the theatre, etc.
Efforts will be made by the organizers to meet the participants from foreign countries at the Airport or the Passengers' Port of Tallinn and to assist with the transfer to Tartu (2,5 hours by bus) where they will be met at the bus or railway station. In any event, it is also not too expensive to take a taxi from the Tallinn Airport or Tallinn Passengers' Port to the coach station.
Participants from a number of countries (USA, Canada, most European countries, etc) can enter Estonia without a visa. We advise the participants from more distant countries (in Asia, Latin-America, Africa), in case there is no Estonian embassy or consular office in their native country, to obtain the Estonian visa either from some of the neighbouring countries or from the Estonian embassy in Stockholm, Helsinki or Copenhagen, on the way to Estonia. Unfortunately, the Estonian visa cannot be obtained upon crossing the border of Estonia.
For the weather conditions in Tartu, look at international weather broadcasts for Stockholm, Helsinki and St.-Petersburg. Their temperatures mostly coincide with those of Tartu.

The official opening dinner of the Conference, with the presentation of "Interlitteraria" 12, 2007, will take place in the evening of Sept. 24. Full conference working days are Sept. 24, 25 and 26. 2007.
