THE IDENTITY OF THE BALTIC REGION: COMPARATIVE LITERARY RESEARCH

During the latter decade the literary „borders“ of Europe are being constantly reviewed since new spaces, zones, webs are appearing. However the questions of linguistic/cultural spaces and globalization, analysed with the help of imagology, geocritics, reception and post-colonial attitudes remain in the scope of literary comparativistics. In this context we suggest to discuss the cultural and literary identity of the Baltic region. Lithuanian literature represents the culture of a Baltic country in the range of common European culture. However the question arises: does the culture of Baltic countries exist? What unifies the inhabitants of the Baltic countries? What kind of mentality, commonness of historical and cultural experience let us state, that geographical zone is not only a formal formation? These questions determine the problematics of the conference.

Themes of the conference

QUESTIONS OF IDENTITY

– The concept of European, national and regional identity.

– North vs. South Europe. The expression of Northern culture.

THE STUDIES OF HISTORICAL MEMORY

– The changes of historical experience in the literature of Baltic countries.

– The space of exile and emigrant literature, the distinction of creative work, the factors of paraliterature, the aspects and problems of research.

THE RESEARCH OF THE CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE

– The motives of the Baltic sea and it‘s resorts.

– The problems of present migration.

– The most problematic Baltic writers.
